As usual, perfect to buy a few weeks or months before travelling, to plan and take note of things of interest you would like to see. Equally useful, and not to large, to have with you in a shoulder bag with a water bottle, sandwiches, w.h.y., for handy reference whilst 'on the spot'.

The detail and the maps are excellent. Don't travel without it.

Usual reliable, well-set out guide book from DK.

This guide book is great if you're going to Florence. I realise it's called "Florence and Tuscany" but I expected more of the AND Tuscany than there was. It's always difficult buying a book online because you can't see how much depth it covers different areas in so for the unwary...The areas outside Tuscany are only covered from page 154 onwards, before that is all Florence is painstaking detail and the actual guidebook section itself finishes on p245 indicating how little there is on anything else. Pisa for example is covered in 5 and a half pages. As we were basing ourselves in Pisa, I was very disappointed in this. There is a map (which bizarrely took me ages to realise was there) detachable inside the back cover. Again, Pisa was covered lightly while Florence had a whole detailed map.We visited Roselle's Etruscan ruins which get a very scant mention as part of a "Etruscan tour" but aren't indicated on any of the major maps meaning it was more luck than judgement that meant we found them.A few other hints and tips in the area would have been great. Ultimately this is really a guide book on Florence and 1-2 day trips from Florence which is fine if that's your thing but that wasn't the trip I had planned as I'd been to Florence before. If that's not what you're planning either then it might be better to get a different guide.

These Guides are excellent: they give you everything you need for a Holiday where you don't want to just laze on a beach, or spend most of the day in a Bar, but prefer to see and study places - looking at buildings, finding cafes to have lunch or just a drink in, but - more importantly - savouring the atmosphere of the city or town itself: The Guides give you walking tours which you can do on your own, without the intrusion of a human Guide, and you have plenty of information as to what to see, where to go, what is closed and when. There is additional information on Restaurants, Entertainment, Banking & currency, descriptions of individual places, brief Histories - and lots more.As a lover of Architecture and History, and shortly re-visiting Tuscany, I find this guide essential. As I also do not drive, it is most useful to have the town plans, which are in abundance, and which show where the Railway Stations are; indeed a map of the town is most important if you don't know where the Tourist Office is - which you don't if you have never been there before - and why waste time trying to find it?Do not leave home without this Guide
