We used this book extensively when revisiting western Crete after a gap of 40 years! We have used other Sunflower guides and are familiar with their format and used to interpreting their walk instructions. The quality of the writing obviously varies as each area has its own experts but this one was particularly good. Having said that, we only followed sections of the car tours, which are very long and adapted some of the walks as many of the routes are not circular and we were using a hire car. The nature of the terrain does make one way walks inevitable however, walking down and up a gorge is asking a lot. We did Walk 11, which is circular, and it was exactly as described as were others. On other occasions we got a taxi to get us back to the car.We were based in Chania and Paleohora, with a couple of days in Kalives. All of them were good bases for walks or touring (although massively changed from 40 years ago) but the delight of the walks was to feel yourself back in an old Crete which hasn't changed much in hundreds of years. If you go to Paleohora, find out about the circuit around Azogires which is not in the book but is well worth doing (our hotel had details of it). We estimate that this book would give us at least two more trips to Crete to cover some of the walks we didn't have time for.

An extremely useful guide for those of us who want to explore Crete by car and on foot. We used it for inspiration, not necessarily following the walks and tours slavishly, but adapting them to our timeframe.Unfortunately, we only had a week there. This book, and the experiences so far, certainly make us want to come back for more!

Good book but not quite what we had expected. It covers long walks but little background to Crete or basic language. I think we needed a general overview first before tackling this.

We had this updated guide before leaving for Crete in vacation. We have used Sunflower books in our travels to Greece for some time now but we took this guide as a reference first, because our plane was landing on the Eastern side of the island and we weren't planning to go far into the western part. We decided in the end to hire a car after we read this book's recommendation on car tours and walks and we didn't regret it. We saw extraordinary scenery and went on walks where it was only us and goats on the road. the illustrations and maps in this books were very helpful and we will surely use Sunflower guides in our future travels.

In my view this is the gold standard for walkers who wish to do a variety of walks in different terrains in the area. It has some mountain walks, but also countryside and coastal ones as well. Also, the book is valuable for the car tours alone, which between them cover many of the stand-out places to visit in western Crete. There are other guides which are more suitable for dedicated mountain walkers, but in my view this one has a much wider appeal.I've been using the various editions of this guide for well over 20 years, and I am looking forward to trying this one out in a few weeks time.

Great book, did 8 interesting, varied and scenic walks from the book. Directions are detailed enough to follow on the ground yet the book is lightweight for a pocket. Descriptions are accurate and it's easy to assess the difficulty of the walk. Used segments of the car tours to lead us to some interesting places. Good maps, too. Crete is a beautiful island with friendly people, good food and fantastically varied scenery!

Always use these guides for walking/outdoor holidays. They are always excellent, and this one is up to standard.
